Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.” – Barbara Katz Rothman
Birth Doula Care
The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother, as well as her partner and/or family, before, during and just after birth.
Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labours are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.
Doulas do not perform clinical tasks, but instead offer support and perspective to you and your partner, make suggestions for labour progress, and help with relaxation, massage, positioning and other techniques for comfort.
Doulas also encourage communication with your caregivers to make sure that you have the information you need to make informed decisions as they arise during labour.
Women who use doulas report having more positive feelings about their childbirth experience.
